Pharmaceutical Process Development Using ANSYS CFD Simulation Technologies

Process development in the pharmaceutical industry faces many familiar challenges such as ensuring product quality, reducing design costs, and improving time-to-market. Manufacturing processes are also becoming more complex and the regulatory environment ever stricter. In response to these trends, many companies are employing ANSYS tools as a complement to existing experimental and correlation-based approaches. In addition to flow patterns and concentration profiles, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) provides detailed quantitative information such as blend time, yield, gas distribution, etc. This makes ANSYS CFD an ideal tool for conducting "what-if" studies and for minimizing the risk of design failure. ANSYS offerings include general-purpose CFD products as well as application specific tools for the pharmaceutical industry, making ANSYS CFD accessible to casual users, practitioners, and expert users alike.
This recording will begin with a brief explanation of the computational process and then show examples of simulation technology applied to a wide range of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical unit operations. We will then show results for flow patterns, blend time, cell exposure analysis and mass transfer (kla) calculations for a typical industrial fermentor. Moving downstream, we will discuss the use of multi-phase analysis and mechanical tools for modeling spray drying, granulation, centrifugation, tablet compression, tablet coating, and product packaging.
