Engineering Simulation Solutions for the Oil and Gas Industry - Gas Dispersion and Smoke Analysis
Duration: 60 minutes
As part of the safety requirements for operating offshore platforms, a safety case which quantifies all of the risks of has to be submitted. In order to quantify the risks of explosion and fire, gas dispersion and ventilation tests have to be carried out. Full scale tests are both expensive and impractical and scale physical model tests have their limitations. With the increasing affordability of powerful computing and advances in software, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has now become the most realistic choice.
With ANSYS CFD simulation software, gas dispersion and smoke migration simulations can be performed. These lead to a greater understanding of the extent of combustible, toxic, and/or volatile gas clouds, its concentration and how quickly it takes for these hazards to ventilate. The risk of these clouds affecting helicopter operations or forming a combustible hazard can then be quantified for a range of wind conditions.
